Parents know that when it comes to kids, easier is better, and the same applies to their oral health.
Baby teeth are teeth too!
Even though baby teeth do fall out eventually, they still play an important role in your child’s life. Baby teeth are used to help your child chew food, speak clearly, and most importantly, they are the teeth that your child will learn to take care of first, so it’s important to establish their healthy habits early.
Many tooth treatments commonly applied to permanent teeth are also available for your kids. Ask your dentist if any of these treatments are right for your child.
Watch and learn
The most important thing to remember is that your children learn primarily by observing others and repeating what they see, especially Mom and Dad! With this in mind, it doesn’t hurt to give your own routine a second glance, as well any older siblings.
When you’re brushing, be open about it. Let your kids know that brushing and flossing is not only something that adults do—it can be fun as well!
Make it a habit
While all children learn at different rates, it’s the habit that helps. One way to encourage this habit is to reinforce their regular routine with a song or game. Sing along with them and try to do this at the same time each morning and evening. Some kids also respond well to progress charts or reward systems.
Don’t be afraid to get creative and try something new. In the beginning, it’s something you and your kids will do together, but the goal is that eventually they’ll do it without a reminder, making those hectic school mornings that much easier.
