How to Save a Knocked Out Tooth

How to Save a Knocked Out Tooth

It’s summertime and the kids will be playing outside more, so the risk of someone in the family suffering a knocked out tooth will likely rise. All it takes is a ball in the face, a trampoline accident, or a fall off of a bicycle to send a person scrambling to save their front tooth.

According to the American Association of Endodontists, more than 5 million people lose a tooth each year. If quick action is taken, it can successfully be reset into its original position and last for years, especially if you get to your dentist within 30 minutes.

Take Action Fast if You Knock Out a Tooth

The key is to act fast! You can’t risk waiting. Below are the steps to save your knocked out tooth.

  1. Pick up your tooth by the chewing surface, and avoid touching the root.
  2. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently, but avoid soap or chemicals.
    • Do NOT dry the tooth or wrap in tissue.
  3. Reposition the tooth back in the socket as soon as possible. Simply reinsert it and press it into place with your fingers. Hold the tooth with your fingers or gently bite down on it.
    • The faster you do this, the better the chance your tooth will survive.
  4. Do not allow it to dry if you cannot get it to stay in, but avoid putting it in water.
    • If you have one on hand, use a tooth preservation kit. You may want to order one in advance for just such an emergency. They are easiest to find online. If you have it, your tooth will keep for up to 24 hours.
    • Put it in a container of milk. Low fat milk that is not flavored with extra sugar is best.
    • Keep it in your mouth between your cheek and gums.
  5. See a dentist or endodontist within 30 minutes of the incident.

Have a Tooth Preservation Kit On Hand if You are a Coach

Any school nurse or athletics coach knows that they’re bound to see an injury to the mouth eventually.  We recommend having a product called “Save A Tooth” or something similar in your first aid kit at all times.  Your kids and their parents will appreciate the extra effort.
