Why Children Should Get Dental Sealants

Why Children Should Get Dental Sealants

Even if your child regularly brushes their teeth, they are still at risk for cavities. Children have a habit of ignoring the problem areas in the back of their mouth, which can sometimes be hard to reach with a toothbrush. This leads to an increased risk of tooth decay and cavities. Dental sealants are a protective coating that seals the chewing surfaces of a child’s most cavity-prone teeth and helps to prevent future cavities. Studies show that dental sealants can reduce tooth decay by up to 60%.

When should children get sealants?

Children should get sealants on their teeth as soon as their permanent molars come in. This allows the teeth to be sealed before tooth decay can begin.

What is the Procedure for Dental Sealants?

In general, the procedure will only take one visit. The application of dental sealants is as follows:

  1. The teeth are cleaned, examined, and conditioned.

  2. The teeth are then dried. Cotton or another absorbent material will be placed around the teeth to keep them dry during the treatment.

  3. An “etching” gel will be applied where the sealant will be placed. This allows the sealant to bond to the surface of the teeth.

  4. The teeth will be washed and dried again.

  5. Finally, the sealant will be placed in the grooves of the teeth and a special light is used to harden the sealant. If necessary the sealant will be buffed down.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can last up to 10 years, however they need to be checked at regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not chipped or worn away. If the sealant is chipped or has started to wear away, a dentist or dental hygienist can repair the sealant.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Sealants?

Many insurance companies cover the cost of sealants. Check with your dental insurance carrier to see if sealants are covered under your plan.
