When should children get sealants?
Children should get sealants on their teeth as soon as their permanent molars come in. This allows the teeth to be sealed before tooth decay can begin.
What is the Procedure for Dental Sealants?
In general, the procedure will only take one visit. The application of dental sealants is as follows:
-
The teeth are cleaned, examined, and conditioned.
-
The teeth are then dried. Cotton or another absorbent material will be placed around the teeth to keep them dry during the treatment.
-
An “etching” gel will be applied where the sealant will be placed. This allows the sealant to bond to the surface of the teeth.
-
The teeth will be washed and dried again.
-
Finally, the sealant will be placed in the grooves of the teeth and a special light is used to harden the sealant. If necessary the sealant will be buffed down.
How long do sealants last?
Sealants can last up to 10 years, however they need to be checked at regular dental check-ups to make sure they are not chipped or worn away. If the sealant is chipped or has started to wear away, a dentist or dental hygienist can repair the sealant.
